On November 9, 2017, Occultic;Nine was released in Japan for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. Approximately one month after the game’s release, 5pb./MAGES. executive director Chiyomaru Shikura tweeted about the company’s intention to work on a port of the game to a new system, as well as a “patch” that would further expand on the game’s ending. In a second tweet, Shikura states that Occultic;Nine’s patch will “take us back to the Science Adventure series,” and he brings up a certain phone call between Shun Moritsuka and another character.
If you need a refresher, episode 7 of Occultic;Nine’s anime features a phone call between Shun Moritsuka and an unknown character. During the call, Shun uses the phrase “El Psy Kongroo,” which is one of Okabe’s key phrases in Steins;Gate. It’s worth mentioning that Shun does not use this phrase in the visual novel.
At the time of the episode’s airing, fans chalked up Shun’s usage of the phrase to him being a fan of Steins;Gate. At that point, the interpretation was that the Science Adventure series (Steins;Gate, Chaos;Head, Robotics;Notes, etc.) is fictional in Occultic;Nine and Anonymous;Code, titles in the “Science Visual Novel” series.
Here’s an example of what this interpretation means: a character like Shun Moritsuka, or any other Occultic;Nine character, would be able to walk into an anime hobby store and purchase a boxed copy of the Steins;Gate visual novel. To the characters of Occultic;Nine, Rintaro Okabe is a fictional character.
Shikura’s new tweet regarding Occultic;Nine seems to be switching things up. Even though he stated in August 2016 that the Science Adventure and Science Visual Novel series do not share the same world, the previously linked tweet implies that the two worlds are connected in some way, possibly being one and the same.
To give an example of what this interpretation might mean, a character like Shun Moritsuka might go to an anime hobby shop to buy a RaiNet manga (fictional series mentioned in Steins;Gate), and he could run into Takumi Nishijou (Chaos;Head), who might be looking for a Blood Tune manga (fictional series mentioned in Chaos;Head) at the same store.
There isn’t a lot of info regarding the port/patch and its release date as of yet, but we here at Kiri Kiri Basara will keep you updated with the latest information about it.
