New comments made to Famitsu by MAGES. director Makoto Asada suggest that the company has big aspirations for 2024—among them, the release of a “sequel” entry, one that could turn out to be Steins;Gate’s own.
Asada’s statement begins with his keyword for the new year: “sequel.” In terms of his aspirations for the next year, he states, “Next year, Steins;Gate, the title that defines our company, will turn fifteen years old. To correspond with this occasion, we have planned a number of projects and titles we hope to be able to present you with this coming year—among them, a long-awaited brand-new entry. We’re preparing a wide range of content for the 15th anniversary of Steins;Gate, and it would make me quite happy to be able to enjoy the celebrations year-round with all of you.”
With regard to the current state of affairs in the company, Asada says, “My keyword is ‘sequel‘—and we are, in fact, currently putting much work into one such project. I believe it’s going to turn out to be quite the stunning entry indeed, and I’m greatly looking forward to the day of its release. We are currently planning to release this entry in 2024—we hope you’ll look forward to it!”
Finally, in terms of what readers should look out for, he writes, “We’re planning a big event for October 2024 to mark the conclusion of Steins;Gate’s 15th anniversary year. We’re hoping to put our all into this one!”
These statements, while heartening for those looking forward to more content from the company, are understandably vague and leave much room for interpretation. For instance, it is not clear whether the “long-awaited brand-new entry” is one of the few previously teased by MAGES.’ Chiyomaru Shikura, or something else entirely; it has also not been explicitly stated which game MAGES. is producing a sequel for, but given surrounding context, fans would not be faulted for thinking Asada could be referring to the long-anticipated thematic sequel to Steins;Gate, first announced in late 2020. Another possible sequel is Steins;Gate 0 Elite, a follow-up to 2018’s Steins;Gate Elite that has received little news since its announcement in 2020.
