Anonymous;Code is the latest entry in the Science Adventure series, officially released on July 28, 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan. An official English localization was released on September 8, 2023 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. You can read our review here, or check out our 100% guide in case you got lost.

The story takes place in 2037, a year after Sad Morning—a massive catastrophe wherein several military satellites malfunctioned due to a large-scale computational error and launched payloads at various major cities. These cities were completely devastated as a result, the death toll numbering around 120 million.

The player follows Pollon Takaoka, a lively young man who dreams of becoming a hero admired by all. Pollon and his best friend, Cross Yumikawa, make their living taking on various hacking-related jobs; their group name, the “Nakano Symphonies.”

During the events of the story, Pollon gains access to an ability allowing him to “save” at the current point in reality, and load his saves at will, restoring time to a previous save; this ability is akin to the saving and loading functions found in various video games.

Anonymous;Code was first announced in 2015, but faced numerous delays over the years before receiving a concrete release date in early 2022. The game would finally see an official Japanese release on July 28, 2022; an English localization, meanwhile, has been announced by Spike Chunsoft for a September 8, 2023 release. This release will feature a full-fledged English dub—a first for Science Adventure visual novels localized for the West.

Anonymous;Code runs on the M2 game engine, in tandem with E-mote—a technology that allows for expressive, animated 2D character sprites. This technology was also previously used in the Occultic;Nine visual novel to achieve similar effects.

Characters

Pollon Takaoka

Anonymous;Code’s main protagonist; 16 years old.
Pollon is an insightful, dauntless young man with a dream: to be a super cool hero that anyone and everyone can look up to. In pursuit of that goal, he founded the “Nakano Symphonies,” a tag-team duo that helps out those in need. The fact that their activities center around white-hat hacking isn’t ideal, but… someone’s gotta pay the bills.

Momo Aizaki

Anonymous;Code’s main heroine; age unknown, background elusive.
Momo and Pollon meet each other by complete chance—and when Pollon learns she’s being pursued by a shadowy force, he decides to help her flee them, staying ever true to his altruistic nature.
Momo is entirely unfamiliar with all forms of electronics, and has none on her when she first meets Pollon.

Cross Yumikawa

A close friend, partner, and older-brother figure to Pollon’s; 17 years old.
Cross makes up the other half of the Nakano Symphonies. He’s quite knowledgeable, and is a rather talented hacker. What’s more, his excellent information-gathering and analysis skills allow him to relay valuable, real-time information to Pollon on the field.

Wind Maki

A friendly, cheerful high schooler who hopes to someday operate as a Nakano informant; 16 years old.
Though he admires Pollon and Cross (the feeling is not mutual), his aim is still, in his words, “to become Nakano’s untoppable, unstoppable guy in the chair”—hence why he hasn’t joined the Symphonies.
He’s currently devoted to a very loving relationship with an AI character.

Tengen Ozutani

A self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades operating under his own detective agency; 37 years old.
Oz is aware that he’s rather old-fashioned. Even still, he chooses not to wear the ever-prevalent “Brain Machine Interface” himself.
What he lacks in energy, Oz makes up for with his superb investigation and negotiation prowess, and his vast knowledge of the occult, urban legends, and conspiracy theories.

Nonoka Hosho

A hacker and gadget developer working for Oz’s detective agency; 10 years old.
She may not seem it, but Nonno (as she calls herself) is a cheeky girl who isn’t at all intimidated by adults. She’s firmly confident in her own abilities, and thanks to her cheerful personality, she has a lot of friends at school, too.

Liddie Kumar

A mathematician and researcher at Viktor Chondria University; 28 years old.
Liddie is very fond of solving worldly phenomena mathematically, and she makes a hobby out of showing others the wonders of mathematics.
Even aside from math, her numerous other talents garner her plenty of media presence and popularity.

JUNO

The world’s greatest hacker; widely known by her hacker name, “JUNO.”
She took part in the Cicada3301 quests from the outset.
She is feared by many thanks to her uncanny talent for showing up whenever—and wherever—she’s least expected.
